Children's Services

Children have special healthcare needs that are different from those of adults. Their bodies respond differently to injury and illness. Baptist Beaumont Hospital’s Children’s Unit was specifically designed with kids in mind… to help them get healthy and stay healthy.

The Children’s Unit blends leading-edge technology and compassionate care with a special dedication to meeting the needs of children - from tiny, premature infants to adolescents up to age 16. Every member of our staff has received specialized training in caring for the physical, social, developmental and emotional needs of children. Our partners in pediatrics offer children reassurance, warmth and compassion, as well as ways to express their feelings and fears.

Baptist Beaumont Hospital provides pediatric services on the Pediatric Unit, Pediatric Specialty Clinic, Imaging, Cardiac Diagnostics, Emergency Department and Peri-operative Services.  Pediatric patients may be cared for in the Intensive Care Unit and stabilized prior to transfer for a more suitable facility for ongoing care.  Pediatric Services are under the medical direction of the Medical Director in collaboration with Medical Staff practitioners with clinical privileges in Pediatrics.  All areas providing services to the pediatric patient are modified as much as possible to provide an environment conducive to the growth, development and safety needs of the pediatric patient, including provision of appropriate toys/diversionary activities.

Scope of Care/Services
The Pediatrics Department is a 17 bed unit which serves children aged birth to 18 years.  Most commonly treated problems include respiratory problems, gastrointestinal issues, and surgical issues.  The standards of care are age specific and address growth and developmental needs of children and educational needs of parents.  These three diagnoses include approximately 90% of patients admitted to the Pediatric unit.

Nursing Care
All nursing personnel providing care in areas where pediatric patients are cared for will have requisite knowledge and skills to meet their nursing care needs with a focus on involvement of the family unit.  The Director of Pediatrics who has specialized training/skills in Pediatric Nursing serves as a resource for staff for specific issues regarding pediatric care. All Standards of Care for the Department of Nursing are applicable to the care of pediatric patients with incorporation of procedures which are specific for the pediatric patient. Each Nursing Care Unit with the potential for caring for pediatric patients will have available references.
